11/13/2022 0 Comments Half life meaning![]() But what are t and t 1/2? Well, t is simply the amount of time that has passed since we counted the N initial atoms we began with, and t 1/2 is the half-life for the decay of those atoms. In other words, if we start with a population of atoms-or, as we’ll see in a moment, anything else that decays exponentially-that we’ll call N initial (that’s the initial number of those atoms), and we then multiply it by 1/2 raised to the power t/ t 1/2, then we can calculate the number of atoms we end up with. This type of decay-in which an average of half the members of a population disappear in a half-life of time … and then another half disappear in the next half-life … and then half of whatever is remaining disappear in the next half-life … and so on forever-is known as exponential decay. We can represent this type of decay in terms of a fairly simple formula: So if there are 1 billion atoms to start with, there will on average be 500 million atoms left after a time equal to their half-life. In other words, in a big group of the same type of radioactive atoms, there is a certain amount of time-called the half-life-that will pass before more-or-less half of the atoms will have decayed. But even if we don’t know when any one particular atom will decay, we do know the overall average rate at which atoms in the pile will decay. The spontaneous nature of this decay means that it’s impossible to predict exactly when any individual atom in a huge pile of atoms will decay. … it’s impossible to predict exactly when any individual atom in a huge pile of atoms will decay. A bit more precisely, some unstable isotopes of certain atoms (meaning certain versions of certain atoms that have certain, shall we say, non-standard numbers of neutrons in their nuclei) will spontaneously turn into different elements and in so doing release other particles and light along the way. This is why DS is amazing. Some types of atoms do a really weird thing-they spontaneously decay into other types of atoms. I also really like fffffrade’s interpretation of this song being a mockery of Hollywood’s message that “true love” = “happiness” I’d never thought about it that way, but it’s also a definite possibility. He became disillusioned and "fell out of love" with the world, but now he's ready to give life meaning again. ![]() At the end when he says "come on, let's fall in love", it's referring obviously to their relationship itself, but also to the world at large. This song is his realization that no matter how confusing the world is, it's his relationship that gives his life meaning and he's asking her to understand and to forgive him for whatever problems his personal crisis might have caused. I think that the guy (Duncan?) is having trouble relating to his significant other because of a general dissatisfaction with the world. Duncan Sheik is always so amazing to me because of how complete a story the song seems to tell. I still think so, but I think it's much more specific. General CommentWhen I first heard this song, I thought it was about a couple who had broken up and realized it was a mistake. To me, Sheik uses music and lyrics to express a moment of time he does this so well that whatever song I'm listening to of his, I just get this feeling, it's like telephathy! Another thing I think about, being a song writing, I sometimes write songs that deal with all my current feelings because I'm never really feeling one emotion at a time. The songs seem to deal with the same sort of feelings. If you really like this song and the lyrics you should check out In Between by Sheik. Maybe love is the cure, when we're in love everything seems to fall in place, but when our crush is over things break down again. When I feel like this, as most of us have at some point, I want to escape and pretend like everything is alright but sometimes we need to see something more that is making all of our lives meaningful-what Sheik calls daylight. This song reminds me of times when I've looked around and I didn't feel right about my life because of all the truth- the truth that people sometimes hide to make themselves happy. Sometimes also known as half-time is a standard industry appraisal term to indicate that no value adjustment has been made for the actual maintenance status of the aircraft. The song deals with "fear", "pretend", a "half-life", "mysteries", our "fellow man", ectera. I always considered this song to be about some girl and that was it, but I'm not sure anymore. General CommentI've been a huge fan of Sheik's for about a year now, this song being the first song that opened me up to the rest of his songs. ![]() To work on finding something more than this fearĬause lately something here don't feel right I want to decide 'cause it's worth deciding ![]()
